TerraFlow and Shoals target 5 GW vanadium flow deployment

TerraFlow Energy and Shoals Technologies Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support a deployment plan of up to 5 GW of vanadium flow battery systems annually.

The strategic MOU will see Shoals provide power distribution equipment to TerraWatt energy storage installations, as manufacturer attempts to commercialize grid-scale vanadium flow battery systems for long-duration energy storage applications.

The deal focuses on TerraFlow’s energy storage platform and Shoals’ PowerHub recombiner technology. The companies are also exploring ways of integrating Shoals’ AirLink data center power distribution solution within TerraFlow’s customer demonstration facilities.

TerraFlow manufactures vanadium flow battery storage systems that are scalable from 10 MWh to 5 GWh according to the company. The Texas-based manufacturer claims its redox battery operates with less than 3.5% degradation over 20 years and is capable of 20,000 to 40,000 cycles.

Jon Parrella, co-founder and CEO of TerraFlow said the company’s long-duration, uninterrupted power supply architecture was designed to integrate directly with critical power infrastructure, and therefore the agreement with Shoals will provide decades of experience delivering large-scale projects.

Jeff Tolnar, president of Shoals, said the TerraFlow technology could help customers “address some of the grid’s biggest challenges.”
