Finnish company Korkia is expanding its investment strategy in Chile to include “powered land”, sites dedicated to data centers where land, permits, and grid access are already secured or in advanced stages.
To meet the massive energy demands of these centers without straining the grid, Korkia plans to integrate these sites with new renewable energy generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Chile is one of four primary markets where Korkia is advancing these developments, alongside Finland, Sweden, and the UK.
In Chile, Korkia already has projects that combine generation, storage, and new grid connection infrastructure. The Terrazas hybrid project, in the Coquimbo region, includes 280 MW of solar power and 1,240 MWh of storage. In April, the National Energy Commission authorized the 220 kV switching substation necessary for its connection to the National Electric System .
At the beginning of September, Korkia also reported progress on two other Chilean projects: Mellizas, in Ñuble, which combines a 218 MW solar plant with an 800 MWh BESS and obtained environmental approval; and Beltrán, a 750 MWh independent storage system in the Valparaíso region that reached ready-to-build status.
These assets are complemented by Paicaví, a 150 MW / 750 MWh BESS (Basic Substation Energy Saving System) planned for La Pintana, Metropolitan Region, which received environmental approval this year . The project involves an estimated investment of US$90 million and its connection to the grid near the Mariscal substation.
Korkia maintains that its expertise in land acquisition, permitting, grid access, renewable generation, and storage will serve as the foundation for developing new data center sites. “Through our platform and local partnerships, we can bring together land, permitting, grid access, renewable generation, and energy storage,” Kantero noted.
The company reports an advanced global portfolio of 15 GW comprising large-scale solar projects, wind power, BESS systems, and now also land designated for data centers. In addition, it maintains another 9 GW of renewable and storage projects in early stages of development.
