Austrian energy storage company NGEN has commissioned an 85 MW/170 MWh battery energy storage system near the German border, which it says is the country’s largest.
NGEN has commissioned an 85 MW/170 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Wagenham, Upper Austria.
NGEN CEO Roman Bernard said the project is currently Austria’s largest grid-critical battery storage system and one of the larger projects of its kind in Europe.
The two-hour system is designed to balance fluctuations in solar and wind generation and strengthen grid stability at a strategic point near the German border.
NGEN had previously commissioned two large battery storage systems in Austria, one in Carinthia and another in Styria. Bernard described the Wagenham project as a significant expansion in scale for the company.
Construction of the BESS began in March, with the system entering operation after about six months of construction.
