Emaldo deal lets home batteries tap Sweden’s flexibility markets

Emaldo, a Nordic smart energy solutions provider, has partnered with Swedish renewable electricity supplier and balance responsible party (BRP) Bixia to expand access to ancillary service markets and help its Grid Rewards customers earn more from their home battery systems.

The partnership combines dynamic electricity pricing with Emaldo’s energy storage and grid rewards program, which compensates customers for lending battery capacity to help balance the grid. Emaldo said its customers currently earn more than €1 million ($1.14 million) per month through the program, depending on market conditions.

“We already have more than 80 MW of installed residential capacity in Sweden and this partnership with Bixia allows us to better serve our customer base,” said Alasdair Firth, chief product officer at Emaldo. “Access to one of Sweden’s broadest portfolios of ancillary service markets means we can unlock new Grid Rewards opportunities for our customers.”

Stefan Takac, head of business unit at Bixia, said the companies aim to “create better opportunities for customers to reduce their electricity costs, maximise the value of their battery system and, at the same time, contribute to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.”

Emaldo, which was founded in Denmark in 2022, now has more than 12,000 systems installed and more than 150 MW of controllable capacity across its markets. Bixia, founded in 1997, has served as a BRP with Swedish grid operator Svenska kraftnät since 1999 and trades directly on the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool.
