Self-described research-driven solar company JT Solar Technology has teamed with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to establish the Joint Battery Testing Laboratory in Sydney to evaluate the performance and real-world applications of energy storage technology.
JT Solar said the laboratory, located at is headquarters in the Sydney suburb of Homebush, is dedicated to understanding how batteries actually perform throughout their service life, and not just on a datasheet.
“As battery storage becomes a critical part of Australia’s energy future, it’s essential to understand not just how batteries perform, but whether they’re suited to Australian conditions and compliance requirements,” JT Solar Director Jason Xiao said. “Through our collaboration with UNSW, we aim to build confidence in battery technologies and support safer, more reliable energy storage.”
Australia’s home battery market has seen significant growth with new data from market analyst Modo Energy showing home battery capacity has grown from 1.4 GW to 7.8 GW in the 12 months since the launch of the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries program.
Modo said the combined capacity of home battery installations now exceeds Australia’s 7.7 GW of grid-scale capacity and predicts that small-scale battery capacity will double again by the end of the decade, to a total of 15.8 GW and 32.9 GWh.
JT Solar said the new lab will connect academic research with industry implementation to independently test and analyse battery energy storage systems, adding the results will support better technology selection, improved system design and more reliable storage solutions, and give industry professionals, businesses and consumers greater confidence in the batteries they adopt.
“Manufacturer specifications offer a useful baseline, but real performance is shaped by operating conditions, charge and discharge cycles, temperature, system design and usage patterns,” the company said.
“Through controlled testing and long-term analysis, the laboratory evaluates battery behaviour under real-world conditions – generating insights into performance, degradation, efficiency and reliability, and assessing systems against Australian standards for safe, compliant operation.”
The launch of the Joint Battery Testing Laboratory comes after JT Solar and UNSW earlier this year partnered to pilot an artificial intelligence-powered energy system designed to make rooftop solar and battery storage more accessible for those living in apartment buildings and multi-unit dwellings.
As part of the Sydney-based initiative, researchers from UNSW Canberra will add an AI-powered layer to a modular power portal system (MPPS) developed by JT Solar and industry partner Voltval Coordinate to coordinate shared solar and battery resources across multiple residents, units and properties.
The project will involve a multi-site pilot across residential and commercial locations in Sydney with the results expected to improve the platform and prepare it for real-world use.
