Australian home battery energy storage installation volumes have roughly tripled their year-on-year level since the Cheaper Home Batteries scheme began July 2025, according to Sunwiz data.
Installation volumes were 990 MWh in June 2026, down 1.55% on the previous month but significantly up on the 320 MWh recorded in July 2025.
The slight decline in monthly installation volumes was reflected in states and territories data. South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and Western Australia (WA) saw residential battery growth, while Victoria, Northern Territory (NT) and Tasmania returned negative volumes, with New South Wales steady.
SunWiz managing director Warwick Johnston said the capacity registered in July 2026 was roughly comparable to that registered in June, because systems installed in April were still being registered in in June.
“Our analysis of installation month figures that eliminate the smoothing effects seen in our charts reveals a market that is quickly recovering,” Johnston said. “June is likely to be 750 MWh and July 945 MWh – far lower than the 3.2 GWh installed in April but comparable to volumes in October 2025.”
The national average size for a system installation was 22.6 kWh in July, marking the third straight month of decline from April’s 44 kWh. The average installation size in August 2025 was 20.7 kWh
July’s national average system size of 22.6 kWh also marks a third straight monthly decline from April’s 44 kWh and June’s 26.16 kWh, though remains above the August 2025 average size of 20.7 kWh.
As the market shifts toward smaller capacities, Victoria’s average system size now sits at 29.94 kWh, well above all other states and territories, which range from 17.69 kWh in Western Australia and 21.72 kWh in the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
