Revera Energy has started construction on the 200 MW/400 MWh Windyhill battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bearsden, Scotland. The London-headquartered company is backed by global investment firm Carlyle which set it up in 2025. To date, it has several projects underway in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Windyhill is Revera’s first Scottish battery to break ground, moving into the construction phase just under eight months after Revera achieved financial close on the project in February via non-recourse senior debt financing – a secured loan – provided by Santander CIB.
Besides Windyhill, Revera has two other BESS projects in Scotland – the Hunterson and Kincardine batteries – both are 400 MW, four-hour duration systems (800 MWh storage capacity). The trio of batteries are backed by an investment of more than GBP 500 million ($665 million) and represent almost 2 GWh of energy storage capacity on Scotland’s grid in an area prone to transmission bottlenecks due to high levels of wind generation.
Commenting on the ground breaking at Windyhill, Revera Energy’s UK acting head and operating partner at Carlyle, Ron Kiecana, said the development reflects the caliber and dedication of the team.
“Today marks a defining milestone for Revera in Scotland,” said Kiecana. “I could not be prouder of what this group has built together, and I’m just as excited for what lies ahead as we work toward a full gigawatt of storage under construction across Scotland by year’s end.”
GE Vernova is on board as Windyhill’s technology partner, while Mitie and OCU are delivery partners on site. Danske Commodities will provide route-to-market services when the BESS begins commercial operations, targeted for the first quarter of 2028. Revera has also entered a 10-year revenue floor deal with Danske Commodities covering 100% of project capacity.
