The number of requests to connect battery storage systems to Germany’s grid increased significantly in 2025. According to an analysis of monitoring data by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), distribution and transmission system operators received a total of 18,158 requests, 194% more than in 2024.
Requested power increased by 43% to 573.5 GW, while storage capacity rose by 139% to around 1,583 GWh.
The number of requests does not directly indicate the number of battery storage projects actually planned. According to the Federal Network Agency, developers sometimes submit projects at several potential sites to increase their chances of securing a grid connection.
If several connection commitments are obtained, only one of the sites will generally be developed. The Bonn-based authority also said its data collection does not yet distinguish between grid-connected and plant-connected battery storage systems. This is expected to change in the future.
The requests are accompanied by connection commitments issued by network operators. These represent binding offers to conclude a connection agreement. In 2025, operators issued a total of 1,937 such commitments, including applications submitted in previous years.
The committed power totaled 54.2 GW and storage capacity reached 142.4 GWh. Compared with 2024, these figures increased by 119% and 207%, respectively, while the number of commitments rose by 55%.
Distribution grids
The vast majority of requests went to distribution system operators. They received 17,775 requests in 2025 for a total of 406.8 GW of power and 1,185.9 GWh of capacity.
Of the applications submitted during 2025, 1,429 received commitments totaling 16.8 GW and 59.2 GWh. This corresponds to around 8% of requests and 4% of requested power. Including applications submitted in earlier years, distribution system operators issued 1,866 commitments in 2025 totaling 26.9 GW and 82.7 GWh.
Far fewer, but significantly larger, projects are being proposed for direct connection to the transmission grid. Transmission system operators received 383 requests in 2025 totaling 166.7 GW of power and 396.8 GWh of capacity.
Commitments were issued for 39 of the applications submitted that year, totaling 17.2 GW and 39.6 GWh. Including older applications, transmission system operators issued 71 commitments during the year totaling 27.3 GW and 59.7 GWh.
For comparison with the existing fleet, the Federal Network Agency said the market master data register currently lists 1,292 battery storage systems with grid connections at the medium-voltage level or higher. Together, they have around 3.6 GW of net rated power and approximately 6 GWh of storage capacity.
The trend has continued in 2026, at least at the transmission grid level, according to the Federal Network Agency. By April 1, transmission system operators had already issued 64 commitments for battery storage systems totaling 24.7 GW of power and 55.4 GWh of capacity.
These figures also include applications from the previous year that have since been processed. The committed power was therefore already close to the full-year 2025 total at that point.
The Federal Network Agency’s current figures for 2024 differ in some cases from values published last year. The authority subsequently updated the data. The revised rates of change reported by the agency should therefore be used for comparisons with the previous year.
