Indian renewable energy company Powertrac has ordered a 10 GWh lithium battery pack assembly line with pack-to-container integration as it expands into battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Kishorsinh Zala, chairman of Powertrac Group, told pv magazine that the company plans to begin commercial production of lithium battery packs in January 2027.
The production line will be installed in Surendranagar district, Gujarat, and supplied by China-based battery manufacturing equipment provider Sunka Lead. Zala said the machinery is expected to arrive by the third week of November 2026, with production targeted to begin in the third week of January 2027.
The line will assemble battery packs from prismatic lithium-ion cells and integrate them into containerized BESS units for commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale applications. The systems will range from 10 kWh to 5 MWh. The facility will also include an in-house container fabrication line.
The production line will use automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for material movement, along with robotic material handling and assembly, automated inspection and testing, and integrated quality-control systems.
Powertrac said the facility will target applications including utility-scale energy storage, C&I energy systems, grid stabilization and ancillary services.
The BESS expansion marks Powertrac’s move from solar PV module manufacturing, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and independent power production (IPP) into energy storage. The company plans to leverage its existing EPC and renewable energy project-development capabilities in the storage business.
Powertrac currently has 480 MW of distributed renewable energy projects covered by signed power purchase agreements (PPAs), including projects under the PM-KUSUM-C program and Gujarat’s DISCOM Distributed Renewable Energy Based Power (DREBP) scheme.
The company has set a target of reaching 1 GW of operational IPP capacity by 2030 and securing PPAs for 5 GW of IPP projects by the same year.
“We also plan to address opportunities across utility-scale energy storage, commercial and industrial (C&I) energy solutions, grid stabilization, ancillary applications and operations and maintenance services,” said Zala.
