Developer Lightshift Energy has expanded its software agreement with FlexGen Power Systems, with the two companies announcing the expansion of a deal for FlexGen’s HybridOS energy management system (EMS) to a now 16-project battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio across PJM and ISO-NE.
The procurement covers operational assets and projects approaching completion in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Vermont. Six projects are online, providing 25 MW / 85 MWh for peak shaving and grid support, while the remaining 10 sites, representing 55 MW / 200 MWh, are under construction. The portfolio’s roughly 3.4-hour average duration reflects both shifting economics in PJM and ISO-NE and where longer-duration assets require changing models of operation.
Lightshift also has expanded its operational facility in Danville, Virginia, with an augmentation at the site, first built in October 2022 as a 10 MW site. Lightshift and FlexGen executed a combined hardware and software upgrade, integrating a new battery management system (BMS) with FlexGen’s EMS and adding physical battery enclosures to the existing footprint, increasing the site’s capacity by 14% (or around 1.5 MW) and extended its lifespan.
“Meeting our energy needs will require getting more from the assets we already have,” said FlexGen EVP Jason Abiecunas.
A second 11 MW project, Danville II, is currently under construction.
FlexGen’s HybridOS interfaces with over 80 battery and PCS configurations, allowing Lightshift to avoid vendor lock-in as it scales.
