Giga Storage has started construction of its 700 MW / 2.8 GWh Green Turtle battery energy storage system (BESS) in Belgium, a project that will become the country’s largest battery storage site by some margin.
The four-hour project is being built on the former site of a zinc factory at the Rotem industrial estate in Dilsen-Stokkem, in Belgium’s Limburg province, at the far east of Belgium’s border with the southern tip of the Netherlands. Preparatory works began in mid-August, with the official start of construction marked on Sept. 17. Commissioning is currently scheduled for the end of March 2028.
Green Turtle will comprise 640 Tesla Megapack 3 units and Tesla is acting as EPC contractor, covering engineering and construction as well as battery supply, and will provide long-term maintenance for the project. The Green Turtle site will also include 188 medium-voltage transformers and four high-voltage transformers.
The project will connect directly to Belgium’s high-voltage network beside Elia’s 380 kV Van Eyck-Gramme transmission line. Elia is constructing a new high-voltage substation on the Rotem industrial estate for the connection. Giga Storage said the project’s capacity will be made available to Elia and market participants for grid balancing and congestion management.
The start of construction follows financial close in July with a mix of borrowed cash and the owner’s own purse. A consortium of 10 banks is providing €450 million ($512.5 million) of debt financing, with the roughly €250 million remainder provided by Giga Storage majority owner InfraVia Capital Partners. Total investment in Green Turtle was said to be around €700 million.
The banking group comprises ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank, Triodos Bank, Triodos Investment Management, a.s.r., Belfius, Hamburg Commercial Bank, Santander and SMBC.
Green Turtle will substantially increase the scale of battery storage operating in Belgium. Engie’s 200 MW / 800 MWh four-hour BESS at Vilvoorde became fully operational in November 2025 and is currently among the country’s largest operating projects. Green Turtle will have 3.5 times its energy storage capacity when commissioned.
