Italy approves 3.25 GW of BESS projects in September

Italy issued 26 single authorizations for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects totaling around 3.25 GW in September, with Puglia leading by capacity and Sardinia’s Sassari province hosting the most projects.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) issued the 26 authorizations between Sept. 7 and Sept. 25, covering BESS projects with a combined capacity of around 3.25 GW. The final authorization, issued through decree 270/2026, approved Adriatic 2 Srl’s 56 MW Acquaviva 2 project in Acquaviva delle Fonti, in the Bari province.

Fvg Renewables secured the most authorizations, with three approvals through its Titus 1 subsidiary for the Lazzari 01, Lazzari 02 and Lazzari 03 projects in Codrongianos and Ploaghe, in Sassari province. The projects have a combined nominal capacity of 200.46 MW and 181.26 MW of grid-injection capacity.

ACL Energy secured the most capacity among the groups receiving approvals, with 362 MW across two projects. Its ACL SPV 12 subsidiary received authorization for the 102 MW Carpi BESS project in Modena, while ACL SPV 9 secured approval for the 260 MW Castelverde BESS project in Cremona, the second-largest project authorized during the month.

Hergo Renewables, a joint venture between Eni and Infrastrutture Spa, received two authorizations through its Hergo Storage 6 and Hergo Storage subsidiaries. The approvals cover the 97.66 MW Brindisi 2 project and the 92.52 MW BESS Cisterna di Latina project, for a combined capacity of around 190 MW.

Bluefield Partners also secured three authorizations through its BSD subsidiaries. BSD012023 received approval for the 30 MW Genzano project in Genzano di Lucania, Potenza, while BSD042024 and BSD052024 received approvals for the Ittiri A and Ittiri B projects in Sassari province. The three projects total around 150 MW.

Ittiri A and Ittiri B are identical, each comprising 48 containerized battery and inverter units rated at 1.255 MW, for around 60 MW per project and four hours of storage duration.

MASE also approved two projects at the same site in Acquaviva delle Fonti. Adriatic 1 Srl received authorization for the 100 MW Acquaviva 1 project, while Adriatic 2 Srl received approval for Acquaviva 2.

Other recipients included Spanish companies Iberdrola, Sunco and FRV, French utility Engie, South Korean company Hanwha and Bavaria-based Pacifico Energy Partners. Italian utilities and developers receiving approvals included Edison, Redelfi, Innovo, S2S Energy, Benny Energia, Sphera Energy, Rinascita Holding and Energy Total Capital.

Southern Italy and the islands accounted for 19 of the 26 authorizations and around 1.89 GW, or 58% of the total. Lazio accounted for 569 MW, while northern Italy had four projects totaling around 790 MW, although all four were relatively large installations.

Puglia led by capacity, with 673 MW across five municipalities in five provinces: Nardò in Lecce, Brindisi, Andria in Barletta-Andria-Trani, Sant’Agata di Puglia in Foggia and Acquaviva delle Fonti in Bari. Acquaviva delle Fonti was the only Puglian municipality to receive two authorizations.

Sardinia matched Puglia with six authorizations, but the projects were concentrated in Sassari province. They included Iberdrola’s 103.95 MW Truncu Reale 2 project in Sassari, the three Lazzari projects in Codrongianos and Ploaghe, and the two Ittiri projects, totaling around 425 MW.

The strongest concentration by municipality was in Rotello, in Campobasso province. MASE authorized three projects there on Sept. 10: S2S Energy’s 60 MW project, FRV’s 242 MW project and Benny Energia’s 188 MW project. Together, they total 490 MW.

Lazio’s three projects were also large: Sphera Energy’s 250.44 MW Valmontone project in Rome province, Rinascita Holding’s 226.2 MW Castra energiae tuscanorum project in Tuscania, Viterbo, and Hergo’s Cisterna di Latina BESS.

Northern Italy accounted for two of the month’s three largest projects, Redelfi’s Cumiana project in Piedmont and ACL Energy’s Castelverde BESS in Lombardy. The region also hosted the Carpi and Ferrara projects in Emilia-Romagna.

The median capacity among the 26 authorized projects was 100 MW, while the average was around 125 MW, reflecting the contribution of the largest projects. Ten projects had capacities between 90 MW and 105 MW, while 14 did not exceed 100 MW and six ranged from 100 MW to 200 MW.

Six projects exceeded 200 MW and together accounted for around 1.47 GW, or 45% of the authorized capacity:

  • Cumiana, Redelfi – 267.84 MW
  • Castelverde BESS, ACL Energy – 260 MW
  • Valmontone, Sphera Energy – 250.44 MW
  • Rotello, FRV – 242 MW
  • Castra energiae tuscanorum, Rinascita Holding – 226.2 MW
  • ETC SAP BESS, Energy Total Capital – 222 MW

Bluefield’s Genzano project was the smallest authorization at 30 MW.

Construction schedules varied significantly, ranging from around seven months for the Tuscania project to 13 months for Acquaviva 1, 18 months for Sant’Agata di Puglia, 24 months for Castelverde and 26 to 27 months for the two Ittiri projects.
