Noon Energy, Sabanci Renewables ink JV for 1 GW long-duration storage for AI data centers

Noon Energy and Sabanci Renewables have signed a joint venture agreement to co-develop up to 1 GW of what it calls ‘ultra long-duration energy storage’ (ultra-LDES) projects to deliver 24/7 renewable energy for large artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. 

The partnership will integrate Noon Energy’s reversible-flow battery systems, designed for more than 100 hours of uninterrupted clean power, with Sabanci Renewables’ portfolio of utility-scale solar and wind projects. Noon Energy said that these projects could provide up to 100 GWh of storage and commercial deployment could begin as early as 2027. 

A previous pilot established by Noon Energy showed a reversible solid oxide fuel cell battery and represents the first fully containerized, modular ultra-LDES system to be operated for thousands of hours, achieving more than 200 hours of energy storage capacity. Noon Energy and Meta signed a ‘100 GWh reservation agreement’ for the technology in earlier April.

“Partnering with an established and forward-thinking company like Sabanci Renewables marks a critical step in accelerating the path to commercialization for our ultra-LDES technology,” said Noon Energy CEO Chris Graves. 

“In this cooperation we will develop the commercial, technical, and operational frameworks to unlock a 100% reliable and renewable grid for cents per kWh using multi-day energy storage.”

The projects will be structured as power purchase agreements (PPAs) or capacity offtake agreements according to Noon Energy. 

Sabanci Climate Ventures facilitated the collaboration. It is an investor in Noon Energy and the sister company to Sabanci Renewables. At this stage, no project site has been announced, although Sabanci Renewables is heavily focused on the ERCOT market in Texas. It is targeting a 3 GW U.S. pipeline over the next five years and currently operates and is constructing four utility-scale solar plants within the ERCOT market, with a combined capacity of 790 MWdc.  

With growing demand from expanding AI infrastructure, for reliable clean energy, ultra-LDES is emerging as a necessity for turning variable solar and wind generation into dependable, always-ready power. 

Murat Oguz Arcan, chief growth officer of Sabanci Renewables and managing director of Sabanci Climate Ventures outlined the joint venture’s commitment to AI.

“We believe that supporting the growth of AI through innovative power solutions is essential to enabling timely, sustainable growth,” Arcan said. 

“By bridging Noon Energy’s ultra-long-duration energy storage technology with Sabanci Renewables’ renewable energy expertise, we aim to contribute to the development of the clean, reliable, and scalable energy infrastructure that the AI economy will require.”

Noon Energy has raised more than $45 million in venture capital and government grants from investors, including At One Ventures, Emerson Collective, Clean Energy Ventures, Aramco Ventures, Prime Impact Fund, Elemental Impact, Sabanci Climate Ventures, D3 Jubilee, the California Energy Commission, among others.
