EDP targets 350 MW of BESS in Sicily

EDP said it has an 800 MW pipeline of renewable energy projects in Sicily, with battery energy storage systems (BESS) accounting for the largest share at about 350 MW, followed by solar with 250 MW and wind with 200 MW.

The group told pv magazine Italia that it has already invested about €220 million ($246.6 million) in the island and built 152 MW of renewable energy capacity. EDP said its utility-scale solar projects currently operating in Sicily total 71 MW, representing a combined investment of €65 million. A further €15 million in capital expenditure is allocated to projects currently under development in the region.

The development status of the pipeline varies. EDP said several projects have reached relatively advanced stages after completing key permitting and development steps, while others remain in the early stages.

Overall, EDP expects to progressively develop the pipeline over the next three to five years, depending on market mechanisms, permitting processes, grid connection availability and market conditions.

The company expects to invest between €250 million and €400 million during this period, continuing to focus on a balanced portfolio of solar, onshore wind and energy storage.

EDP said energy storage is taking on an increasingly important role in its development strategy for Sicily.
