Californian-based power infrastructure company Nightpeak Energy has reached commercial operation of the second phase of its Bocanova battery energy storage system (BESS) in southeast Texas, doubling the site’s total capacity to 300 MW / 600 MWh, adding flexibility to the ERCOT grid.
Nightpeak Energy announced that the 150 MW / 300 MWh Bocanova 2 project in Brazoria County entered commercial operation on September 17, following financial close.
The project doubles the capacity of the Bocanova BESS, where the first 150 MW / 300 MWh phase, Bocanova 1, began commercial operation in August 2025.
Bocanova 2 is equipped with Tesla’s Megapack 2 XL battery storage systems and operates under a long-term offtake agreement with an unnamed investment-grade counterparty.
Financing for the project was provided by MUFG Bank through a tax equity bridge loan and a construction-to-term loan, while U.S. Bank provided traditional tax equity financing.
Paris Hays, co-founder and CEO/CDO of Nightpeak Energy, said Texas is experiencing rapid growth in electricity demand and will require additional infrastructure and flexible energy storage resources to support it.
“With 300 MW now operating at Bocanova, we’re putting that kind of flexibility to work in one of the most dynamic power markets in the country. We’re grateful to the City of Alvin, Brazoria County, and the local community for their support in bringing Bocanova to life,” said Hays.
Founded in 2022, Nightpeak Energy said it has developed and acquired a portfolio exceeding 1 GW of “operating and de-risked capacity spanning gas-fired generation, battery storage and powered land development.”
In other ERCOT news, independent power producer Linea Energy recently closed project debt financing and a preferred equity commitment for the 250 MW / 500 MWh Mesa View BESS in Upton County, Texas.
