German energy company Uniper has signed a seven-year tolling agreement with Stadtwerke Lippstadt for a planned 20 MW/42 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Roßfeld, Germany.
The contract is with Lippstädter Ladesäulen GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Stadtwerke Lippstadt that will own the battery. The subsidiary will receive a fixed fee in return for granting Uniper use of the storage system.
Uniper will take responsibility for marketing and commercial optimization of the battery, adding flexibility to its energy trading portfolio. The modular lithium iron phosphate (LFP) system will be supplied and maintained by VENSYS Elektrotechnik. Commissioning is planned for summer 2027.
“Through our strategic realignment, we are opening up a new business area and investing in the flexibility of our energy portfolio,” said Siegfried Müller, managing director of Stadtwerke Lippstadt.
The two companies already cooperate on the procurement of standard energy trading products. The tolling agreement expands that relationship into battery storage.
Project planning began with a feasibility study examining potential sites and the technical and economic conditions for building a battery system. Roßfeld was identified as the most suitable location, and the study’s findings informed the subsequent project development and decision to use a tolling model.
