Chinese renewable energy equipment manufacturer Goldwind has expanded its technology licensing partnership with Vietnamese energy storage company GG Power, with plans to jointly pursue nearly 2 GWh of front-of-meter battery energy storage projects and further develop localized manufacturing capabilities in Vietnam.
The two companies recently signed a strategic cooperation agreement covering production line upgrades, new technology licensing, technical training and battery storage equipment supply. They have also identified approximately 3.3 GWh of potential product demand over the next three years to guide manufacturing and supply chain planning.
The latest agreement builds on a technology transfer partnership established in November 2025 between Goldwind and GG Industries Joint Stock Company, which operates under the GG Power brand.
Unlike conventional arrangements centered on exporting finished battery energy storage systems (BESS), the partnership combines technology licensing with local manufacturing, enabling the Vietnamese company to produce and develop storage systems using technology supplied by Goldwind.
Under the original agreement, Goldwind agreed to provide BESS manufacturing technology and an automated production line with a designed annual capacity of 5 GWh. The Chinese company also committed to long-term technical support, engineer training, production process optimization and updates to operations and maintenance technologies.
The resulting manufacturing facility began operations on April 11, 2026, in Industrial Park No. 5, Xuan Truc, Hung Yen Province, northern Vietnam. Developed with an initial investment of VND 300 billion ($11.4 million), the 1.2-hectare complex includes a two-story production facility and an R&D center.
According to GG Power, the factory operates with more than 90% automation and is designed to manufacture battery storage systems for residential, commercial and industrial, and utility-scale applications.
The company has also developed and optimized its energy management system (EMS) with technology partners to accommodate the operating characteristics of Vietnam’s power grid. GG Power said the system supports local operational control and domestic data storage.
The Vietnamese manufacturer aims to increase the local content of its storage products to more than 50%, gradually strengthening domestic engineering, manufacturing and supply chain capabilities. Its longer-term ambition includes supplying energy storage systems to other Southeast Asian markets.
The latest cooperation agreement extends this model toward front-of-meter storage applications. However, the proposed 2 GWh project cooperation and 3.3 GWh demand outlook represent plans and estimate rather than confirmed equipment orders. Neither company has disclosed more agreement details including licensing fees, investment commitments or project delivery schedules.
Goldwind, formally Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd., is listed in Shenzhen and Hong Kong and is primarily known for its wind turbine manufacturing business. Its operations also encompass energy storage, renewable energy development and energy services. GG Power, established in 2025, is a Vietnamese-owned energy storage manufacturer focused on domestic production and system integration.
The partnership comes as Vietnam seeks to establish a domestic battery storage supply chain. Its revised Power Development Plan VIII targets approximately 10 GW to 16.3 GW of installed battery storage capacity by 2030, creating potential demand for manufacturing, integration and technical services.
This arrangement illustrates an alternative route for Chinese renewable energy companies expanding overseas: licensing technology and supporting local industrial capabilities rather than relying solely on exports of finished equipment.
