Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) issued two further single authorizations for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects totaling 480 MW on Nov. 2, following nearly 7 GW of approvals over the previous two months.
The projects are a 280 MW facility planned by Miura Storage Srl in Tuscany, in the province of Viterbo, and the 200 MW Bess Castegnero project, developed by BESS Pieve Srl in Castegnero Nanto, in the province of Vicenza.
Benny Energia, the Rome-based owner of BESS Pieve, plans to build the 200 MW project with 160 battery containers and 160 power conversion systems. Construction is expected to take around 30 months.
The energy storage developer told pv magazine Italia that it has a BESS project pipeline of around 2.3 GW. This includes 1.5 GW of projects preparing for construction and intended to participate in Italy’s capacity market and MACSE storage procurement scheme, around 700 MW awaiting authorization, and a 200 MW project in Udine that has been operating for nearly three years.
The other project authorized by MASE is Miura Storage’s 280 MW facility in Tuscania. It will comprise 327 battery containers, with construction expected to take five months.
