International power producer ContourGlobal has continued its busy 2026 expansion with an announcement that it has signed a 3 GWh order with Chinese battery giant CATL for battery energy storage systems (BESS) for its projects.
The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery order has been made to supply three of ContourGlobal’s projects, namely the 500MW/2,000 MWh Wallace BESS project in Scotland which it acquired in June and is in “advanced development”, the 100 MW/400 MWh Taxiarches project in Greece which it picked up as a ready-to-build in January, and the 90 MW/360 MWh battery for the Los Maitenes hybrid solar-plus-storage project in Chile, which hosts a 141 MW solar farm, which began just days ago.
ContourGlobal said under the agreement with CATL, it will receive 526 battery containers, hosting LFP cells. Each container has a capacity of 5.64 MWh, configured for a four-hour discharge duration. While the peak power output wasn’t stated, each block would be expected to deliver 1.4 MW. CATL noted it will offer its liquid-cooled system integration technology.
ContourGlobal has the backing of KKR, and the British firm has, according to its website, 5.7 GW of renewables projects in operation and 2 GW under construction. Just weeks ago, it also announced a PPA with Tesla on a 1 TWh solar-storage PPA in Arizona.
In July 2025, it announced the acquisition of 9.5 GWh worth of BESS capacity in Italy.
What they said:
“We are very proud to announce this framework agreement with CATL, one of the world’s leaders in BESS,” said Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal. “Beyond equipment supply, we are establishing a standardized utility-scale BESS platform across multiple countries, enabling consistent engineering, testing, commissioning and long-term asset management. By harmonizing technical requirements and project execution practices, we reduce delivery risk, accelerate project deployment and create a scalable model for continued growth of our storage business. This agreement reflects the shared commitment of both companies to accelerate the deployment of reliable utility-scale battery storage through long-term collaboration.”
“This collaboration brings together our advanced battery technology and ContourGlobal’s deep expertise in developing energy infrastructure,” said LB Tan, CCO, Co-President of Sales and Marketing at CATL. “With a shared vision, we are delivering safe, reliable and long-term value for customers in the energy transition journey of Europe and the whole world.“
