Italian developer secures ready-to-build status for 1 GWh standalone BESS in Chile

Limes Renewable Energy has achieved Ready-to-Build (RTB) status for its 200 MW / 1,000 MWh BESS Huañil project in the Coquimbo region of Chile. The milestone marks the Italian developer’s first RTB project in the country and its first outside of Italy, supporting its broader international expansion strategy.

Located in the municipality of Salamanca, the Huañil Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will store electricity from Chile’s National Electric System (SEN) and provide up to 1,000 MWh of storage capacity. The lithium-ion project is designed to deliver 200 MW of continuous power for up to five hours and represents an estimated investment of approximately $188 million.

Since November 2025, Limes has secured environmental approvals for three projects in Chile: the 200 MW BESS Huañil, the Pradera Larga hybrid project (84 MWp solar PV and 90 MW BESS), and the 150 MW BESS Ganso. While BESS Huañil is the first to reach RTB status, the other two projects are actively progressing toward the same milestone. In total, Limes’ maturing Chilean pipeline currently includes approximately 180 MWp of solar PV and 620 MW of BESS capacity.

Following the RTB milestone, Limes will focus on revenue structuring aligned with project finance requirements, while concurrently advancing strategic partnerships and power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiations. The company stated that the pipeline in Chile will support its plans to increase installed capacity and strengthen its position as a hybrid Independent Power Producer (IPP).

Martin Libra, Head of LATAM at Limes, noted that the RTB milestone reflects the company’s focus on developing “high-quality, bankable, grid-ready projects” and positions it to advance strategic partnerships in Chile.

Cristiano Spillati, Managing Director of Limes, stated that the achievement reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to Chile and its local-international development model.

Across Chile and Italy, Limes’ fully authorized and RTB pipeline now exceeds 600 MW. In its home market of Italy, the company has more than 400 MWp across 25 projects, with an additional 120 MW across six solar projects progressing toward authorization before the end of the year.
