Celebrations marking India’s 80th year of independence have extended to the energy storage sector, with a South Asian mobility heavyweight stepping comprehensively into the market.
Ola Electric’s new Shakti platform marks a new opportunity and the company has said that it is built entirely around domestic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell technology and Ola’s own vertically integrated gigafactory.
With backing and regulation around local content, the domestic product is aiming to support India’s rapidly growing grid demands while reducing capital costs. All major projections show India requiring one of the world’s largest storage fleets, with current plans to add at leat 44 GW of BESS capacity by 2030.
Ola Electric is a well-known success story in the region, having been founded in 2017 in Bengaluru. The company primarily designs and manufactures electric two-wheelers, sourcing batteries for scooters from LG Energy Solution and CATL. It began building the Krishnagiri Gigafactory for LFP battery manufacturing in 2023 to supply its needs, and it remains the only significant battery plant in India, using cylindrical cells.
The Shakti line of products
From the new products, the residential entry point is the Shakti Gen2, offering whole-home backup and smart solar integration. It lands with introductory pricing starting at INR 99,999 (USD 1,045) for the 4.6 kWh (3 kW) model and INR 1,74,999 (USD 1,830) for the 9.2 kWh (6 kW) variant. Deliveries are slated to kick off in November 2026.
The commercial and utility sectors are also targeted, with later rollouts starting March 2027. Here, Ola is deploying the Shakti AC Rack (73 kWh with an integrated 18–50 kW inverter) for facility backup and peak shaving, alongside a modular DC equivalent tailored for telecom infrastructure.
At the heavy end is what Ola is calling the Mahashakti architecture for grid-scale. The liquid-cooled utility system packs 6.26 MWh and 2.5 MW per container, is natively configurable for 2-to-4-hour durations, and meets the major storage requirements across grid-support and renewable integration scenarios.
The company said it had “already signed an MoU with Axis Energy for the potential deployment of up to 20 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2032 under the Mahashakti platform.”
