Financial close has been reached for a 15 MW / 60 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Windpark Greenport Venlo (WGV) in the Limburg region, Netherlands.
The project initiator, WGV-EOS – a partnership between Greenchoice, ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund (ABN AMRO SIF) and Windunie – confirmed the milestone this week, with the project to move into the construction phase. The battery is expected to be operational in the summer of 2027 according to project developer Green Energy Storage.
Located adjacent to the A67 highway in Venlo, and near the German border, the battery will operate alongside the 39 MW nine-turbine WGV, using a cable-pooling arrangement to share the existing grid connection.
WGV-EOS said the battery will operate without additional grid consumption, charging exclusively from the wind farm, which has been operational since 2022. The WGV consists of nine turbines, six of them north of the A67 and three situated near the A67/A73 junction, generating enough electricity for roughly 40,000 households according to WGV-EOS.
“Our battery will be charged exclusively with electricity generated by Windpark Greenport Venlo. While this approach is not unique, it does add complexity to the operation of WGV-EOS. It is a challenge we fully embrace, because integrating energy storage with a wind farm allows renewable electricity to be used more efficiently,” said Nick de Wilt, manager projects & energy hubs at Windunie.
The project represents an investment of nearly €12 million, with ING financing a significant portion of that amount. Green Energy Storage is responsible for the development of the battery, including contracting battery supplier Alfen, and the financing process with ING. The company will continue to supervise the construction phase, and later, assume asset-management duties.
After delivery, Greenchoice will operate the battery, while Windunie will oversee project supervision and financial management.
In 2025, Alfen, Greenchoice and Green Energy Storage upgraded the Wind Park Hartel 2 site to have a 20 MW / 40 MWh BESS, a site is roughly 160 kilometers away from WGV.
