Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has authorized five battery energy storage system (BESS) projects totaling 468.2 MW across Piedmont, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Puglia and Emilia-Romagna.
The approvals follow a record September, when the ministry issued single authorization (AU) decrees for more than 3 GW of battery storage projects.
The largest of the five projects is Engie Produzione’s 140 MW Leini BESS in Leinì, near Turin, in Piedmont. Under decree 281/2026, the project received authorization to build a system comprising modules rated at approximately 7 MW each. Construction is expected to take 24 months.
Two other projects originated from applications filed by GRA BESS in 2024. Following a corporate split initiated in late 2024, the applications were transferred to separate subsidiaries.
Santa Maria Srl received authorization under decree 279/2026 for a 104.4 MW BESS spanning Santa Maria La Longa and Pavia di Udine, in the province of Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Construction is scheduled to take approximately 10 months.
Casei Srl received authorization under decree 280/2026 for a 100.8 MW BESS in Casei Gerola, in the province of Pavia, Lombardy. Associated grid connection works will also take place in Castelnuovo Scrivia, in the province of Alessandria. Construction is expected to take around 10 months.
In Puglia, Galatina BESS 2 Srl secured authorization under decree 282/2026 for a 73 MW storage system in Galatina, in the province of Lecce. Its planned construction period of approximately nine months is the shortest among the five projects.
Casetta Storage Srl received authorization under decree 283/2026 for the 50 MW Finale Emilia storage project in the province of Modena, Emilia-Romagna. Construction is expected to take 18 months.
