Trina Storage to supply 196 MWh battery in Japan

Trina Storage, the energy storage unit of Trinasolar, will supply the battery system for Nozomi Energy’s 50 MW/196 MWh Nozu battery energy storage project in Oita Prefecture, Japan.

The company said it will deliver its Elementa 2 Pro 5 MWh system for the project, which it refers to as AEJ Nozu, in Nishihata, Nozu. The project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2028.

Nozomi, a Tokyo-based renewables platform launched by Actis in 2023, reached financial close on the project Sept. 14 with non-recourse financing from Aozora Bank. Nozu won a 20-year, CPI-linked capacity contract in Japan’s fiscal 2023 long-term decarbonization auction.

“For Nozu and other projects in Japan, our focus is on combining advanced technology with strong local capabilities,” said Leo Zhao, head of energy storage for Asia-Pacific at Trina Storage.

Trina Storage is also supplying a 160 MWh utility-scale battery in the Kyushu region. In September, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese developer AMP-lify for about 1 GWh of grid-connected battery projects using its Elementa 3 system.

Japan has since tightened the auction’s storage rules. In the third round, for fiscal 2025, it awarded 1.25 GW of battery storage across 19 projects after excluding storage projects with less than six hours of duration.
