Vattenfall has signed a contract with battery storage supplier Fluence for a four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) at the former nuclear power plant site in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany. The project will have 254 MW of power capacity and more than 1,000 MWh of energy storage capacity.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the facility expected to enter operation by the end of 2028. The battery will connect to the 380 kV transmission grid operated by German transmission system operator 50Hertz.
Fluence will supply its Gridstack Pro 5000 platform, including battery systems, power electronics and an energy management system. The company will deliver the project on a turnkey basis, covering engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and long-term service.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship between the companies. Fluence Germany Vice President and Managing Director Julian Jansen said the companies had already worked together on eight battery storage projects across three European countries.
For Vattenfall, the Brunsbüttel installation is a key part of its flexibility strategy. The company said the project will nearly double its existing battery storage capacity.
